Brentwood School’s Under 13 netballers put in a fantastic performance yesterday to win the Final of the School Sport Magazine National Schools’ Netball Cup!
Despite a strong start from their opponents, Godolphin & Latymer School, who went up by 6 goals, the Brentwood girls fought back with fantastic shooting and feisty defending.
The knockout competition, which kicked off last September with regional matches, was open to all state and independent schools in the country. The Cup Final, held in Bristol, saw Brentwood go head-to-head with their West London opponents.
Despite Godolphin & Latymer’s fierce start, the girls pushed back hard in the second quarter to lead by 6 goals. Fantastic shooting from Lauren Burgin and Annie Shaw kept Brentwood ahead for the remainder of the game, and feisty defending from Amelia Moule, Lauren Ager and Mia Citroen severely restricted Brentwood’s opponents.
In centre court, Anneleise Gennings and Lucy Holloway showed tenacity and composure under pressure to make some excellent feeds into the shooters. At the final whistle Brentwood enjoyed a highly impressive 43-34 win to be crowned National Champions!
Other members of the team included Sarah Dawe, Emma Philpott and Charlotte Lloyd.
Headmaster Ian Davies congratulated the girls and their coaches on a stunning victory which was the highlight of an excellent sporting week for the School.
Brentwood’s fencing squad secured silver in the Public Schools’ Fencing Championships following three intensive days of action at Crystal Palace International Stadium.
Among numerous highlights, excellent performances from Harriet Evans, Laurie Collins, Freya Collins, Oscar Holt, Bishka Chand, Catherine Child, Eleana Winand, Chris Danquah and Matthew Goodwin ensured valuable points in Brentwood’s fight for overall team gold.
Mr Davies said: “Particular congratulations must go to Anna Belova and Valentin Ivanov, who both fenced with courage and skill to win individual silver and bronze medals respectively in the sabre discipline.”
At the end of the Championships, Brentwood secured four team trophies: second in the overall girls’, second in the overall boys’, first in the boys' Mount-Haes overall weapons and second in the overall cup.
Other individual highlights included 5th place for Oscar Holt in the Boys’ Junior Epee, another fantastic 5th place for Catherine Child in the Girls' Senior Foil, a great 8th place for Eleana Winand in the Girls' Senior Epee and a very good 6th place for Matthew Goodwin in the Boys’ Mount-Haes Epee.
*On Tuesday (22nd March) Brentwood will have all four age groups represented at the Essex Netball Cup Finals - a first for any school and a reflection of Brentwood’s strength in depth on the netball court.
