Brentwood School’s computing department is a rare gem. We are one of only a few schools in the country that offers Computer Science. At Brentwood, our students enjoy the latest technologies in a state of the art environment.
Something we are often asked about is the difference between Computing and ICT. Essentially, ICT teaches you how to use a word processor. In Computing, we teach you how to make one.
Computing allows students to take a look under the bonnet of a computing system: a mainstay of modern life. The facilities in the department embrace the latest technologies in a state-of-the-art suite.
We pride ourselves on our students’ successes, friendly environment and innovative and exciting project choices.
In our phones, fridges, pockets, or managing a metropolis – computer programs are woven into the fabric of our lives. We aim to give pupils an understanding of creating well-structured, reusable code on the latest systems and devices, applicable in a wide variety of situations and environments.
We encourage our students to be creative and apply the technologies they learn about, from programming smartphones to building an artificial intelligence. We have used technologies in projects including smartcards, Lego NXT, barcode readers, iPhones and Smartphones.
We also urge our students to use the skills learned in the classroom to extend their knowledge and understanding. For example, we get students to develop a Lego Turing machine.
