Enterprising Brentwood School students Leo Del Rosso, Arun Dhesi, Ben Coker and Dom Reynolds have been shortlisted for the University of South Wales Making Business Happen Awards.
The innovative Lower Sixth Form youngsters will travel to the university’s Cardiff campus on Friday (Feb 13th) to present their ‘Footy Life’ App in a Dragon’s Den-style pitch to a judging panel of academics and entrepreneurs. Students have been taking part in the University of South Wales Aspiring Entrepreneur Programme - which involves working as a team to develop a new business proposition - as part of their Friday afternoon co-curricular activities.
Head of Business Studies, Miss Michelle Sorohan, said the team’s success was the result of the students’ initiative and hard work. They submitted a comprehensive business plan and were shortlisted from hundreds of applicants.
The Brentwood team’s Smartphone App would enable local, junior and school football teams to arrange fixtures with like-minded teams in their area, research and enter regional tournaments and find referees for upcoming matches.
The students will prepare a 15 minute presentation – including a Q&A session - and each member of the team will be play a part in pitching the idea. Winners of the Aspiring Entrepreneurs Award and their school/college will share £10,000 and also receive a business support and enterprise mentoring package.
“We are very proud of the students’ efforts and achievement to reach this stage in the competition and there is no doubt that they will learn a great deal by taking part at this level,” said Miss Sorohan.
Shortlisted student Leo Del Rosso said: “Our aim as a company is to increase the efficiency of amateur football. Briefly, our idea is an App that connects football teams to available opponents, referees, managers, players and tournaments. For example a team will be able to create a profile and enter the date and time that they need a referee to officiate their game and our App will 'connect' them with a referee in their same location who is available to referee on the same date and time that the match is occurring.”
