Keen jazz musicians of all ages are invited to Brentwood School over the Easter holidays to take part in one of two jazz courses; one for adults, ‘Essex Easter Jazz’, and one for senior school age children, ‘Spike’s Jazz Academy’. The courses will see some of the UK’s leading jazz tutors teaching at Brentwood School and have proved a huge hit in past years.
‘Essex Easter Jazz’, which will take place from 14th to 18th April 2019, is open to both aspiring and established musicians looking to explore this exciting genre with some of the country’s leading jazz tutors.
The Spike Robinson Foundation, which sponsors the course, has also set up a ‘Jazz Academy’ for all youngsters aged 11 and above and will give this next generation of jazz musicians the opportunity to hone their skills with the same talented panel of educators. This takes place in the previous week, 9th to 12th April.
The relaxed four-day courses will focus on the playing and learning of all types of jazz with instrumental lessons, tutor performances, band practice and a concert finale. There are a number of workshops to choose from, including building confidence, the role of instruments in different styles, how to direct your band, and advanced jazz harmony. Participants must be around Grade 5 standard or above.
Course director and Brentwood School drum teacher, Mr Marc Cecil said: “This is the 3rd year we’ve run this course and each year it gets bigger and better. The facilities at Brentwood School’s Music Department create an attractive environment which is key to making this course a success.
"Past tutors have included musicians from the bands of Sting, Jeff Beck, Jools Holland, Eric Clapton and the BBC Big Band. We have also enjoyed the company of the Jazz Professor from the Royal College of Music, the Artistic Director of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and numerous British Jazz award winners and nominees."
