1st March 2010

I am pleased to report that the South House Charity week went extremely well with nearly £2,000 raised for their House charity and some wonderful cakes being both cooked and eaten.  I am delighted to announce that Izzy Fewster has won a £15 iTunes voucher by guessing the number of jelly beans in the jar correctly.

This has been a busy time for the Sir Antony Browne Society.  The meeting this evening is led by Mr Peter Tatchell, who is talking about Human Rights, and last Friday Professor Anthony Slinn gave an excellent talk about The Impressionists before the Sir Antony Browne Dinner at which the after dinner speaker was The Times journalist Andrew Billen, who is a former pupil.

Over the weekend I very much enjoyed reading the Fifth Form reports which have been written with great care by your teachers and tutors.  It is excellent to see so many of you thriving on the demands of GCSE and clearly working hard to achieve good results this summer as well as making full use of all the extra-curricular opportunities available here.

CCF Adventure Training: Because of a cancellation there is now a place available on the CCF adventure training trip to Snowdonia during the first week of the Easter holidays for either a 4th or 5th form boy.  If anyone is interested, they should see Mr Carr as soon as possible.

Headmaster's Prayer

All of you will be aware that our boarding houses play an important part in the life of the school and their performance in House competitions often is much better than their size. Last week the school had a two-day boarding inspection the result of which is that Brentwood is the first school in Essex to have been awarded the status of "outstanding." All our boarders and their housemasters and housemistresses emerged from the inspection with great credit and it is good to know that if you, or a friend is considering boarding, there is nowhere better to go in the whole of the county.

Special mention must go to the junior boys' team who won the freestyle and medley relays. Congratulations to James Kidd (Captain), Matt Dawe, Alex Haines and Calum Connelly for this outstanding achievement.

5th January 2010

Welcome back after what I hope has been a very peaceful holiday.

Headmaster's Prayer

As usual during the holiday a lot of planning and preparation takes place for the new term and we took the opportunity to give some careful thought to the values we think are important as a school and what sort of people we expect you to be both while you are at this school but also after you have left. I am taking this opportunity at the start of the new calendar year to ask you to think carefully about the sort of people you are and the sort of people you want to be. Do you value justice and fairness? Are you courteous and considerate to the needs of other people? Are you reliable? Do you have the courage to take action if you see something that is wrong? Are you mindful of the needs of other people less fortunate than yourself and do you have respect for all people regardless of ethnicity, social background or religion?

Education was once described as that which remains with us when we have forgotten everything we learned at school and the start of a new calendar year is a good opportunity for all of us to reflect on who we are and what we find important in life.

You may be aware that the Chaplain's wife, Mrs Gilchrist, died after a fairly short illness during the holidays and the Chaplain will be away from school until after Easter. His lessons are being covered by Ms Roe who we are delighted to welcome back to the school.

We also welcome back Mrs Thorpe, who is covering for Mrs Edwards' maternity leave and two new members of staff are joining us, Dr Vassiliou to teach Physics and Miss Hobot to teach Economics. We also welcome four new GAP students today.

Notices:

A former pupil - Mr Andrew Lansley MP - who is the Conservative Shadow Minister foe Health, will be speaking about the relationship between Parliament and Government at 4 o'clock this Thursday in the Memorial Hall. Mr Lansley is one of the leading Conservative politicians and he will be an important member of any future Conservative Government.

Anyone wishing to participate in the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme must return the reply slips to reception by next Wednesday 13th January.

Notice about Silver Duke of Edinburgh's Award - there will be First Aid training for all 4th years taking the Silver award in the Memorial Hall on Monday 11th January at 4 o'clock. The First Aid component is compulsory so please see Mr Wright if you have any concerns.
