Combined Cadet Force

The Combined Cadet Force aims to develop qualities of leadership, responsibility and self-reliance.

Cadets join in the 3rd Form for at least two years. Training is specified by the Ministry of Defence and is geared towards proficiency awards in the three services:

  • The Royal Naval Section offers a wide selection of nautical activities and is famed for the ‘diversity' of courses that it offers to its rapidly increasing cadet force: whether it's kayaking & sailing, scuba-diving or completing the rigorous HMS Collingwood assault course.  One of the highlights of the year is undoubtedly the entire section taking part in the Remembrance Day service and the new cadets are always a credit to the section with their fine display of marching.
The sixth form cadet officers are tremendous in their instruction of the junior cadets, teaching them the role of the navy, ranks and rates, rope work, camp craft, open-fire cooking, navigation, communication and of course drill - guiding them on their way to their naval proficiency award.  The Royal Navy section will be heading for Portsmouth for ‘Field Day', where the cadets will get their first experience of navigating a Fast Motor Launch or a Yacht across the Solent to the Isle of White, not to mention the new experience of staying overnight on board HMS Bristol.
  • The Army Section basic training is geared towards the award of Army Proficiency Certificate which covers weapon training and shooting, drill, map reading, camp craft for self-reliance and basic infantry craft. Cadets then undertake more advanced training. Time is also spent at Army Training Establishments participating in activities such as rock climbing, range firing, canoeing and infantry field training.
  • The Royal Air Force Section involves basic drill and weapon training in the first two terms and a study of the RAF in the third term. Once this is completed, the cadet is eligible for flying experience. During the second year Friday afternoons are devoted to a study of the principles of flight, aircraft knowledge, propulsion, aircraft recognition and air navigation.
