The Learning Development Department provides additional support through assessment, target setting, in class support and individual and group work.
All students have a right to be able to access and gain fully from the curriculum. In certain cases for this to be possible, students may need a greater degree of differentiation and support to realise their potential.
The individual needs of all students cover a wide spectrum. Special educational needs exist across the ability range and the level of support offered by the Learning Development Department will try to reflect these needs. All policy and practice is formulated with reference to current educational legislation. Learning Development gives educational provision which complements, but is additional to or otherwise different from, the educational provision available in the students' mainstream classes.
Emphasis is placed on identifying individual needs and assessment by external agencies such as Educational Psychologist or Family and Child Consultation Services is put in place where felt necessary.
Especially Gifted and Talented children who have great aptitude and skills also have special needs and they too may need assistance to enhance their learning.
Assistance is also available for students for whom English is an Additional Language. In addition, cross curricular support classes are provided by the Learning Development Department to students who have English as an additional language where necessary.
