A First Hand Look at Roman Life
01 July 2009
Pupils in the first year learnt about the habits and customs of ancient Rome, when they were visited by a Roman time traveller in costume. The two-day programme took place in Brentwood School's Memorial Hall and explored Roman customs and culture, with the help of props and displays of genuine Roman artefacts. The sessions were interactive and pupils dressed up in Roman costumes, tried Roman make-up from natural ingredients like Ochre and acted out everyday scenes of Roman family life such as taking meals reclining on their sides. They dressed as characters from Roman History and learnt about the Imperial family trees of the Julio-Claudian emperors and also staged a Roman wedding. The highlight of the day was the chance for a pupil to dress as a gladiator and to act out a battle in an amphitheatre. Head of Classics, Mr James, Alderson who masterminded the two-day event explained, "This is a valuable way of demonstrating what Roman life was like to modern day classicists. Activities such as this bring relevance to the academic curriculum and give valuable background information about the Latin texts that pupils read. The day is one that is enjoyed by all and there are plenty of opportunities for pupils to take part themselves, which is always an important part of the learning process."
