Brentwood School marked the 90th anniversary of Armistice Day and the symbolic end of World War I by holding a special Service of Remembrance at the Brentwood Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Helen on Tuesday 11th November 2008. The service began with the choir singing the Introit: Ave Verum Corpus of Mozart. The Chaplain welcomed the school pupils, teachers, Old Brentwoods and dignitaries to the Cathedral, including former Brentwood School Head of History and Housemaster of School House, Godfrey Thomas.
Joining many others across the country the congregation took part in the two minute silence at 11:00 a.m. The Old Brentwoods then attended a further Chapel service at Brentwood School conducted by the Venerable David Lowman, Archdeacon of Southend and Brentwood School Governor, to dedicate a memorial plaque.
A book launch in Old Big School of Mr Thomas' new publication "Everyone a Hero" followed the service which all Old Brentwoods, Governors and friends were invited to attend. Mr Thomas presented the first copy of "Everyone a Hero" to the wife of the late Michael ‘Micky' Hall OBE, former Commanding Officer of the Brentwood School CCF. Mr Thomas felt that a book about former pupils of Brentwood School was overdue and has "put this right" by providing the name, rank, age, decorations, date of death and, where available, place of burial or commemoration for all Old Brentwoods who died in conflict.
The book also highlights the conditions that the Old Brentwoods and millions of others endured, and the campaigns in which they fell. Godfrey Thomas is anxious to include as many Old Brentwoods as possible in his book and anyone with further information of Old Brentwoods who died in service of their country since 1945 is urged to contact Godfrey Thomas on 01206 385024.
