Senior Water Polo Competition goes Swimmingly Well

27 April 2009

Brentwood School can already boast excellent swimmers such as pupils; Tom Davies, who plays for the Eastern Region U16 Team, James Pierce a member of the Eastern Region 3rd year Team and 2nd year pupil James Kidd who competed in the last block of the Essex County Championships on Sunday 29th March and won a silver medal in the 200 metres Butterfly in the time of 2.39.25. The Essex swimmers are now training for the Eastern Regional Championships and London Championships.

To help Brentwood School swimmers improve their talents the school holds an annual House Water Polo Competition.  The school's six Houses took part in the competition this week, fighting for the winning title, last year held by Weald House. Three matches were played both on Monday and Wednesday with the top four winners being put through to the semi finals and finals on Thursday.

The semi-final matches commenced with West v East, an exciting match with both teams playing their best but West taking the lead. The next match saw a face-off between North v South, with North winning and going through to the finals. The finals therefore featured North v West and finished with the final score standing at 5 - 3. The final results were as follows:

1st            NORTH HOUSE
2nd        WEST HOUSE
3rd         EAST HOUSE
4th         SOUTH HOUSE
5th         WEALD HOUSE
6th         SCHOOL HOUSE

Mrs Mervin, swimming coach at Brentwood School commented "Water Polo is becoming a very successful sport at Brentwood School. A couple of years ago Water Polo was non-existent here but we now have an U14, U16 and U18 team which includes pupil Danielle Staunton who plays for the GB Ladies U25s Team, a fantastic achievement. Our next step is to introduce a 2nd Year, Middle and Junior House Water Polo Competition."

Another great step forward for Water Polo at Brentwood School is the hosting of the Essex Schools Water Polo tournament at Brentwood School Sports Centre. This will be for the U14's on Saturday 16th May 9am - 12.30pm and should see approximately seven schools taking part.
