Brentwood School has once again claimed the overall title at the annual Public Schools' Fencing Championships. The event was held at Crystal Palace over three days; around 1,300 pupils from 150 schools from across the country took part, with Brentwood School winning a number of individual and team trophies. Brentwood School has now reigned supreme in 4 of the last 5 years.
The school took 22 fencers to the whole championships, including seven internationals and brought 10 other fencers on their specialist day. They competed in boys' and girls' events in foil epee and sabre categories, in three different age groups, senior (years 12 and 13), junior (years 10 and 11) and mount-haes (years 8 and 9).
The team secured the title with 248 points which was a remarkable achievement. On the first day the girls performed exceptionally well securing the overall girls' foil title with Josefine Engel and Hee Ah Cho coming 2nd and 3rd respectively in the senior event whilst Rebecca Lissmann came 2nd in the junior foil. In the boys' events, Johannes Spicker came 3rd in the senior foil whilst George Baxter managed 3rd in the Junior epee (not his main weapon).
The second day was dominated by George Baxter who defended his junior foil title from last year. This result helped him to also retain his Master-At-Arms trophy which is presented to the individual who scores the greatest number of points across all three weapons in his age group.
The final day saw Hannah Nelson win the mount-haes girls' sabre and this was complemented by a remarkable result from Hee Ah Cho who secured the silver in the senior girls' sabre.
In addition to winning the Overall combined trophy, which is presented to the school which scores the greatest number of points in all events, Brentwood also won the Ann Williamson Cup, which is awarded to the school with the greatest number of points in all the girls' events.
