CCF Pass Inspection with Flying Colours

02 May 2008

Lt Col S.J. Hall. OBE of the Royal Marines was invited to inspect Brentwood School's Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Guard of Honour this term.  Brentwood School boasts the largest voluntary CCF in the country.  The guard comprised cadets primarily from the Fifth and Sixth Form and was trained by WO1 D Crane REME and commanded by PO Alex MacLellan.  Contingent Commander Major J Seaman and the Headmaster accompanied Lt Col Hall as he made his inspection.

After lunch, a range of activities took place around the school site demonstrating the work of the different CCF Sections.  The Cadre trainee NCO's were assessed on teaching lessons covering radio communications, first aid activities, field cooking and infiltration exercises.  Basic Coy members were based in the main field where the cadets were improvising stretchers, doing obstacle crossings, building shelters and using camouflage and concealment in preparation for battle.  The Commando Coy illustrated ambush training and the RAF B flight were taking part in various leadership tasks.

The Royal Navy section demonstrated scuba diving and practical navigation in the swimming pool and topper rigging on the field.  Fellow cadets were also based in the Cunliffe building where they were using computerised aircraft recognition and flight simulator programmes.

At the end of the event the Cadets assembled on the field in front of the Pavilion for a full contingent parade where Lt Col Hall thanked them for their hard work and praised them for their achievements.

Contingent Commander Major J Seaman commented, "The inspection was a great success.  All the visiting officers were highly impressed with the quality of the training they saw and were full of praise for the contribution made by our officers and senior NCO's as well as commenting on the level of enthusiasm showed by the cadets."

Lt Col S.J Hall made mention to the "very high standard of drill in the Guard of Honour" and compared them to a professional unit.  He also said he "was very impressed with the enthusiasm and the variety and high level of training".
