23 June 2010

On Tuesday 22 June, over 120 athletes represented the school at the District Athletics Championships held at Melbourne Park, Chelmsford. The event was held in glorious sunshine and is a logistical exercise of significant proportion. Heats were held during the course of the morning with the top 8 qualifiers competing in finals in the afternoon.

All 8 school teams competed magnificently and there were some tremendous performances. In 1st Year, Naomi Kpogho produced a blistering 100m to convincingly win her event and this feat was matched by Nathan Southern in the 200m. In 2nd Year, Nicole McKechnie, Christy Dailly and Maddie Gough yet again produced scintillating displays to further enhance their reputations as outstanding athletes. 3rd Year pupil Austin Lipman won the 100m in 11.27 which bodes well as he has now been selected to compete for Essex at the English Schools Championships to be held in Birmingham over the weekend of Friday 9 July. Helen Walls displayed considerable fighting spirit in a very exciting 800m race. Lastly, Rosie Dailly won the long jump and 300m competing for the 4th Year girls which is an excellent achievement and similarly, Nikita Usichneko won the Triple Jump for the 4th Year boys.

In the end, pupils and staff awaited to hear the final results. Brentwood School girls won every trophy available which is a simply outstanding achievement. The Brentwood boys finished second in every age group which is a good achievement and is impressive when we compare our success in cricket and athletics to that of other competitive schools. The overall trophy was awarded to Brentwood School (won by 88 points) and was collected by senior athletes Lauren Tai, Rosie Dailly, Stephen Woodford and Olumayowa Olubowale.

Director of Sport, Mr. Kayne commented: "I should like to thank all pupils and staff for their significant achievements and dedication. Of course, the District Championships is no longer the finale of our season and we wish our Junior Girls' team the best of luck as they prepare for the English Schools Track and Field Cup National Final at Gateshead International Stadium on Saturday 3 July."
