Brentwood School Music Scholar Martin Bartlett has successfully passed his Grade 8 on the bassoon. At just 12 years old, this is Martin's third Grade 8, and he has passed all three with Distinction - the highest level. Martin's other Grade 8s are in the piano and the recorder, but not satisfied with three instruments he is now taking organ lessons at the School to challenge his musical ability even more.
Director of Music David Pickthall added that "Martin has gained a place in the National Children's Orchestra (NCO) which gives talented children the chance to play in a full symphony orchestra. The NCO has different age-banded orchestras and Martin has been accepted into their eldest group - the Main Orchestra, which is one of the world's finest children's orchestras. To become a member Martin had to audition for the orchestra, preparing and performing three pieces of music and sight reading. Martin commented "I was very pleased to hear that I was accepted into the National Children's Orchestra and I was surprised to join the ‘Main Orchestra' rather than the ‘Under 13s' group even though I am only 12. Music has always been a passion of mine and playing the bassoon runs in the family as my mother also plays it!"
When asked what his favourite instrument is out of the piano, recorder, bassoon or organ he replied; "I enjoy playing all of them, but would have to say that my favourite instrument is the bassoon, this is because it is unique and not many people play it. However, playing the organ is also great fun".
Director of Music David Pickthall added: "Martin's achievement could well be unique; he is certainly the youngest pupil to gain three Grade 8s in my twenty two years as Director of Music at Brentwood School. He and his teachers deserve our hearty congratulations."
