Michaelmas Chamber Concert
15 October 2009
Following the huge success of this term's House Music Competition, a full audience of parents enjoyed the Michaelmas Chamber Concert in the Memorial Hall on Wednesday 14th October. The repertoire comprised of solo and small ensemble pieces, some featuring GCSE and A Level Music Students, whose performances were recorded as part of their course work. The concert featured talented musicians and a broad range of instruments and musical styles. The programme began with Matthew Jorysz's performance of "Concerto in A minor" by Vivaldi/Bach on the Memorial Hall's historic Gern pipe organ. Miles Russell followed with an oboe solo: "Grovlez" by Sarabande. Veronica Spinks provided the first vocal performance of the night with her moving rendition of "Se tu m'ami" by Perolesi, accompanied by Head of Academic Music Mrs Hilary Khoo on the piano. Veronica sang this with confidence and flair. Mrs Khoo stayed to accompany U6 cellist Oliver Cross in music by Saint-Saens. The audience was then wowed by a duet performed by Iona Talintyre and Head of Strings Miss Suzanne Loze, who played the Double Violin Concerto by Bach accompanied by Director of Music Mr David Pickthall on piano and pupil Matthew Jorysz on cello. To complete the first half of the evening Martin Bartlett, who plays for the National Youth Orchestra and is - like many of those performing - a Music Scholar at the school, played two pieces on the piano: "Study V1" by Czerny and "Sonata" by Galuppi, which left the audience in high spirits at the interval. The second half of the evening resumed with Mozart's, "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (I)" played in perfect harmony by The Huddleston String Quartet. An encore of the theme from Fawlty Towers was well-received. This was then followed by Gerta Safonova's flute solo of Roussel's "Jeux de Flute" which was beautifully executed. Iona Talintyre then played the "Minute Waltz" by Chopin followed by baritone Reiss Meister singing "Stars" (from Les Miserables), accompanied by Mr Pickthall on piano. John Stowell played "Jazz Improvisations" by Pastorious on the bass guitar and Jack Davis played a poignant piano solo "For the love of the princess" (from Braveheart) by Horner. The second half of the evening concluded with senior flautist Carina Gascoine's rendition of "Andante & Scherzo" by Ganne accompanied by Mr Pickthall on piano. The audience showed their appreciation for this piece and all the music with applause as the musicians modestly came forward to take their bow.
