New Sixth Form Centre's Green Credentials

18 November 2009

Brentwood School is currently undergoing developments, building a new Sixth Form Centre, 400-seat Auditorium and additional classroom block.  In line with the School's policy of being as environmentally friendly as possible, these buildings will have the latest in eco technology; in the way the buildings heat up and cool down.  The buildings are being built with passive energy systems that are as energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly as possible.

The buildings will be built with a ‘Ground Source Heating Pump', to heat the buildings.   This works by running water deep into the ground through pipes, to do this, the school is drilling 15 holes beside the Main School, each of which goes down into the soil to a depth of 300 feet.  At that depth, the ground is at a relatively constant temperature of around 12 degrees, meaning that the water running through the pipes is heated to this temperature.  When that water is then pumped into the buildings' heating systems, it is already ‘pre-heated' and therefore needs less energy to bring it up to the temperature required to heat the building.

The second innovative feature is a ‘Passive Ventilation System' for the classroom block to keep the air in the building cooled.  This function works so that instead of chilled air that is forced around the building by an air conditioning system, the building will be cooled by using fresh air.  However, it's not simply a matter of opening the windows, as this will let in noise as well as fresh air.  Instead, acoustic vents underneath each window will bring in fresh air from the outside but without the ambient noise, and ‘chimneys' will then draw the used air out of the building on the basis that hot air rises.  The combination of these two elements creates a ‘passive ventilation system', which does not require a constant input of energy, to maintain an appropriate environment in the classroom.

Headmaster Ian Davies commented: "In conjunction with high specification air-tightness and thermal insulation, these 2 eco systems will significantly reduce the overall energy use of the buildings.  We aim to be as sustainable as possible and will be teaching the pupils about these developments in Science and Geography."
