Outstanding Start for the 1st XI

08 October 2009

Brentwood School's 1st XI football team continue their unbeaten run in what has been an extraordinary month. Head of Football, Mr Ian Wignall knew that the first weeks of the season would be challenging and had implemented excellent preparations including squad rotation in order to ensure that the squad remained fit. At present, the side have played 10, won 7 and drawn 3, remaining unbeaten. Some of the highlights inclide:

On Wednesday 23 September, the team commenced their Boodles ISFA U18 cup competition with a resounding 6-1 victory over Bury Grammar School. Brentwood made a tremendous start and had reached 3-0 after 10 minutes. Although Bury Grammar scored with a well taken free kick, 3 second half goals ensured safe passage through to the second round which will be away at Kings', Chester on Wednesday 7 October. Rob Edkins and Danny Marshall both scored twice in a convincing victory. On Saturday 26 September, Brentwood School 1st XI made their debut in the Elgin Capital Southern Independent Schools League. This prestigious competition involves matches against Eton, Bradfield, Chigwell, Forest, Aldenham, Highgate and Westminster who were our first opponents. Brentwood imposed an excellent pace and tempo and were soon in the ascendency. Tom Everitt scored an excellent goal showing pace and perseverance and Jasper Read was outstanding throughout. The central defence partnership of Joe Farrant and Max Rosenberg was rock solid once again and this bodes well for the rest of the season. The final result of 4-0 reflected our dominance.

The new week started with a challenging 1st Round of the ESFA Cup and a journey to Sudbury to play Great Conard School. On a difficult surface, the boys played well to lead the game 2-0, however the opposition scored two excellent goals and for the first time this season, the 1st XI had to show their mettle. Tom Everitt was once again clinical in front of goal scoring in the last 5 minutes to ensure that we progressed in the competition and we look forward to learning of our next opponents. Finally in what has been a sensational week, the 1st XI played St Martin's on Wednesday 30 September in the Essex Cup. This was a highly competitive game with arguably St Martin's controlling large portions of the play. Sean Worricker scored directly from a corner with an excellent delivery and seemingly the boys were closing out the game.  St Martin's fought to the last and equalised with barely two minutes left which took the game into extra-time. As is often the case, extra-time ground to a nervous stale-mate and the inevitable result was penalties. The quality of penalty taking was impressive from both sides and at 9-9, the goalkeepers stepped up. David Lloyd saved his opponents penalty with a fine stop and this meant he had to score to win the game. Luckily for us, David is a fine striker of the ball and with an assured strike of his left foot, Brentwood were through by the narrowest of margins.

Lastly, on Tuesday 6 October, the 1st XI travelled to Chester to play the Second Round of the Boodles ISFA Cup. The match, played on a beautiful day on a perfect surface started as a tense affair going in at half-time at 0-0. After the break, Brentwood School took control and began to dominate in the end running out convincing 4-0 winners. Goals from Jordan O'Donoghue, Robert Edkins, Tom Everitt and Jaspar Read ensured that we will in the draw for the last 16.
