Public Schools' Fencing Championships

09 April 2008

Brentwood School reasserted themselves as the strongest fencing school in the country when they regained the title of Overall Winners at this year's Public Schools' Fencing Championships which were held in Nottingham from 18th - 20th March.

The school had won the coveted Overall Combined Trophy in 2005 and 2006 before narrowly losing it to Millfield School last year.  This year, however, revenge was sweet as Brentwood scored an amazing 254 points to put them in 1st place with Elizabeth College, Guernsey finishing in 2nd place with 244 points and Millfield in 3rd on 238 points.  This result is even more impressive bearing in mind that Elizabeth College entered a team of 35 fencers against Brentwood's team of 26.

In normal domestic or international competitions fencers will only fence in their one chosen weapon which may be Foil, Epee or Sabre however in the Public Schools' Championships each fencer will represent their school in all three weapons and can therefore gain valuable points for their school whilst enjoying the opportunity to have a go at the other weapons.

As well as winning the Overall Combined Trophy, Brentwood also won the All Junior Events Trophy (for Years 10 and 11), the All Sabre Events Trophy (for Years 8 - 13) and the Mount-Haes and Junior Foil Events Trophy (for Years 8 - 11) as well as finishing second in the Girls Sabre Events Trophy.  Second place by only 4 points to Millfield in this trophy is a particularly good result as Millfield were able to field 4 Under 20 international girl sabreurs from Years 12 and 13 whereas Brentwood have only one international girl sabreur, Year 11 pupil Grace O'Connell.

Brentwood's two individual gold medals were won by Grace O'Connell who finished first in the Junior Girls' Sabre beating fellow Under 17 international Rebecca Hopkins 15-12 in the final and Alexander Crutchett (Year 13) who beat fellow Under 20 international Maiyeron Ratneswaren of Whitgift 15-11 in the final of the Senior Boys' Sabre.

Brentwood's Under 17 international Ashley Henderson (Year 11) took silver in the Junior Boys Sabre narrowly losing to fellow international Will Fotherby.  Bronze medals were won by Under 17 international Hee Ah Cho in the Girls Junior Epee and also by Year 11 Alex Tai in the Boys Junior Foil and Year 9 Nick Sabharwal in the Boys Mount-Haes Sabre.

The School's top scoring fencers were Hee Ah Cho who took the Master at Arms title for Junior Girls with Grace O'Connell finishing in 6th place.  Alex Tai finished 2nd in the Junior Boys Master at Arms and Ashley Henderson finished 5th.  George Baxter finished 4th in the Mount-Haes Boys and Alexander Crutchett finished 5th in the Senior Boys.  Master at Arms titles are awarded to the fencer who finishes with the most points across all three weapons.

The fencers were accompanied on the trip by Master-in-charge of Fencing David Sach and coaches David Taylor, Karim Bashir, Chris Sullivan and James Thornton.  Travelling as referees and assistant coaches for the school were ex-pupils Alex O'Connell, Anthony Crutchett, Ben Cooper and Didier Nohlmans who all continue to fence at their respective universities.  Brentwood School is renowned for maintaining links with its former pupils and all four boys return regularly to fence at the school and enjoy the benefits of its outstanding coaching system and world class facilities.  These facilities have recently earned the school the privilege of being chosen as a fencing training camp for the London 2012 Olympics.

Following Brentwood's outstanding success, Headmaster Mr Ian Davies who traveled to Nottingham to watch the competition said,  "I was very pleased to be able to watch the boys and girls fencing so well.Over 150 schools and 1,500 fencers take part in this prestigious competition which requires great discipline and athleticism. The school is currently National Champion in Senior Girls Tennis,Under 13 Football and Fencing, and came second in a National cricket competion last summer. This level of achievement reflects outstanding coaching by teachers who show great commitment to pupils in the school."
