Speech Day

30 June 2009

The Guest of Honour at Brentwood School's Speech Day was, The Honourable Mr. Justice Eady, who also attended the school in the 1950's.

The Chairman of Governors' Mr Colin Finch welcomed those attending and invited pupils Sarah Stuckey and Gillian Horn to give the Latin speech of welcome to The Honourable Mr. Justice Eady.  The Headmaster of Brentwood School then gave his report of the year which celebrated the achievements of pupils both in the classroom, on the sports field, in extra-curricular activities and in charitable work.  He reflected on the excellent examination results of the previous summer and a very successful 452nd year at the school.  He looked forward to the developments at the school and commented, ‘I am delighted to say that building work for the new Sixth Form Centre, Auditorium and 16 additional classrooms starts in July.  This is one of the most exciting developments in the schools history and it will be complete in 2011.'

The Honourable Mr. Justice Eady was then invited to present the prizes and give his address.  He spoke about his school days and his clear remembrance of being at the school when it celebrated its 400th Anniversary and meeting the Queen when she visited the school in 1957.  He congratulated all of the pupils for succeeding in a ‘bewildering array of activities' and also commented ‘I'd like to thank the school staff for providing such wonderful training to pupils and they no doubt deserve prizes themselves'.

Head of School, Lewis Gaston proposed the vote of thanks on behalf of the school, thanking The Honourable Mr. Justice Eady for his wise counsel and the school for the opportunities that it provides.  Lewis took the opportunity to thank his praespostors publicly for all of their support in the past year and added ‘it is very difficult to describe how indebted I am to this school and how incredibly sad I am to leave after 14 years.'

When the formalities were concluded, guests were invited to have tea in the schools dining halls and later that evening enjoyed the Summer Promenade Concert.
