Sydney Grammar visit Brentwood School

07 October 2009

On Monday 28 September, Brentwood School was delighted to host players and staff from Sydney Grammar School as they embarked on their football tour to England and France. The Australians arrived in London on Sunday 27 September and after a morning at the Tower of London arrived at the school on Monday 28 September raring to play against our U15A team and 2nd XI.  Sydney Grammar School has a proud tradition in sport and we were prepared for two competitive games.

Brentwood U15A's are a strong side and straight from kick off it was apparent that our Australian friends would have a tough task on their hands. At half time, Brentwood School were leading 4-0 following a sensational 10 minute spell from West Ham Academy striker, Elliot Lee scoring 4 quick-fire goals. In the second half, Sydney Grammar School to their credit competed well and managed to score their first goal of the tour with a fine strike from 18 yards. The final score of 8-1 did not truly reflect the effort of our visitors. In the senior match, Matthew Woodcock scored arguably the fastest goal to be seen on M1. At kick-off, Sydney passed the ball in regulation style to a central defender, but somehow Matthew pounced and volleyed the ball home just 6 seconds into the match. The Australians then settled and worked hard throughout the game narrowly losing 2-0.

After the match, all boys attended tea in the dining hall and there were some short presentations. In the evening, the Sydney Grammar pupils were hosted by Brentwood School families and this was a wonderful opportunity for our boys to spend time with their Southern Hemisphere guests. Next morning, we said goodbye to our visitors as they travelled to Alleyn's for their second fixture. Director of Sport, Mr Jeff Kayne should like to express his sincere thanks to all pupils and parents who were involved in hosting.
