Careers Convention at Brentwood School

22 March 2010

The University Entrance and Careers Department at Brentwood School held its annual Careers Convention in the Courage Hall on Wednesday 17th March.  The Careers Convention is held for parents and students to explore possible avenues open to them when they leave school, and is targeted towards 4th, 5th and 6th Form pupils.

Old Brentwoods and advisors from a range of professions and universities were invited back to the school to provide guidance to students on future careers, university choices and gap years.  Experts from over 90 organisations representing higher education, the private and public sectors, the armed forces and charities attended.  They brought advice and information about their specific fields of expertise and were on hand to answer any questions that the students had. Many former pupils returned to their school as exhibitors to share their experiences of further education and careers.

A number of parents and over 300 pupils from the 4th year upwards arrived from 6.30pm and circulated amongst the advisors who were seated at designated tables in The Courage Hall to find out more. The school see this as an invaluable service and encourage even more families to attend every year.

Dr Ken J Cooper, Head of Careers & University Entrance commented, "We received very positive feedback from our students.  The evening provides many of the answers to the questions that our 4th, 5th and Sixth Form pupils have about higher education or careers choices when they leave school.  We ask organisations to attend from a wide range of disciplines so that our students can explore not only traditional career and higher education paths, but also other options such as gap years or voluntary work. The school is always very appreciative of people that give their time so freely to assist pupils with help in deciding what could suit them as a future career."
