Geography Workshop at Brentwood Pre-Preparatory School

26 January 2010

Brentwood Pre-Preparatory School pupils in Year One and Two took part in Geography workshops today with the Freshwater Theatre Company, to compliment the Geography curriculum this term.

The aim of the drama workshops is to help develop the pupils understanding of this term's topics of landscapes.  The workshops really brought the subject to life through drama and dance. Year One are currently learning about St. Lucia's landscape and how very different it is to their own, and Year Two are reading the Katie Morag stories, as a way of finding out about Struay, a fictitious Scottish island.

Year One were first to take part in the workshop and they explored the rich tapestry of the St. Lucian landscape, culture and traditions, through the story of a child and her fisherman grandfather ‘A Caribbean Story'.  The environmental and ecological lessons were taught by bringing the Caribbean island to life through acting and by dancing to the sounds of Carnival!

Year Two pupils partook in a workshop titled ‘An Island Home' which is a book about Katie Morag.  The children took an imaginary ferry across the sea to the island of Struay in Scotland.  Pupils sang songs, took part in a role play with props from the island and acted out some of Katie Morag's adventures which had numerous geography and literacy links. The children also took a tour around the island of Struay and discovered the mysterious Castle McColl and even joined Katie Morag's family and friends in an energetic dance at the island Ceilidh.

Mrs Sarah Wilson, Headmistress at the Pre-Preparatory School commented: "This workshop was an excellent and fun way for the pupils to put into practice what they have learnt in class and visualise the stories they have read."
