Recycle, Reuse, Reduce
22 April 2008
Brentwood Pre-Preparatory pupils have been learning about the importance of recycling at the early age of 3. Pre-Prep teacher Mrs. Morgan is environmentally aware and takes a personal interest in recycling and reducing carbon emissions. Mrs. Morgan creates activities for her pupils that involve recycling and writes facts sheets for pupils to take home to their parents. "Increasing awareness about environmental issues at this age is important for the future and the children really enjoy recycling in class" said Mrs. Morgan. Pupils are encouraged to recycle in class and bring in items of waste from home that can be recycled, such as, old notes books and paper, old plant pots, aluminium cans and foil etc. We have set up a ‘writing centre' in which the children write on recycled paper that they have brought in from home including old Christmas and Birthday cards. The class also has a compost bin in which they put all their vegetable and fruit waste and then eventually we put the compost in the school garden. Students recently did a project in which they made sculptures made completely out of recycled materials (please see photo). The Brentwood Pre-Preparatory pupils are encouraged to bring in cans and foil in from home for the Alupro charity that the Essex County Council has teamed up with. ‘Alupro' is a non-profit organisation that plants one tree in Malawi for every ton of aluminium or foil that is recycled. Mrs. Morgan said "Helping children learn about how to recycle at school and at home by using environmentally friendly language when recycling will make it a part of their world from a very young age and after all it is their world they are protecting".
