Studying History in the Sixth Form takes this Humanities subject to a whole new level. Building upon your investigative abilities learned at GCSE, you will improve your critical and analyitical skills in order to develop a greater understanding of both Russian and British History during the late 19th and 20th centuries.
At A Level, you will cover what is arguably one of the most vibrant periods of Russian history under the three Tsars, including the accession of Alexander II during the Crimean War right up to the revolutions of 1917. There are opportunities to compare this highly volatile period in Russia with the development of democracy and politics in Britain. You will gain an understanding of the challenges faced by the British government when establishing the Welfare State and examine the influence of important political figures such as Ramsay MacDonald, Stanley Baldwin, Winston Churchill and Clement Attlee.
The IB course in History focuses on the histories of individual countries around the globe, promoting international awareness and the understanding of other cultures. Studies, therefore, include areas such as communist China under Mao Zedong and the Arab-Israeli conflict from 1945-79. Using a comparative, thematic approach broadens the whole concept of studying History at a higher level, allowing for students to discern interconnected causes and consequences while simultaneously assessing the impact of certain events on others.
There is also an opportunity to undertake individual research, whether you are taking History for A Level or IB.
At the end of the two years, as a Brentwood Historian, you'll be able to compare, explain and articulate the pace and extent of political, social and economic developments in this exciting 100-year period. The analysis and writing skills you will have gained will be extremely useful - not only if you want to continue with History, other Humanities or Law, but also as fundamental life skills which you can apply in so many different contexts beyond school.
“Brentwood School was 100% the right choice - my child has taken every opportunity to try and develop new skills.”
