Brentwood School Hosts 5th Bank Holiday Rapid Play
Brentwood School proudly hosted and co-organised the 5th Brentwood Bank Holiday Rapid Play chess tournament on Saturday 29th August, bringing together over 120 players of all ages and skill levels.
The event drew a diverse crowd ranging from seasoned veterans to first-time tournament competitors, with more than 70 years separating the oldest and youngest players. Ten students represented Brentwood Senior and Prep Schools across two main playing sections structured by chess rating and experience.
Brentwood School Chess Captain Max (Year 12) delivered a flawless performance to win the Open Section, scoring a perfect 6 wins from 6 games. Fellow Year 12 student Anushka also put on a strong showing, finishing in joint 4th place.

The tournament carried an international flavour with the arrival of prospective boarder Karl and his family, who flew in from Berlin to compete and tour the campus. Karl scored an impressive 4 points out of 6 before spending the evening analysing games and playing casual matches with tournament winner Max.
The Minor Section, designed for less experienced players, saw Year 3 student William claim top honours. Adding to the school connection, William’s father is an Old Brentwood. Year 8 student Anirudhan finished as runner-up, continuing his momentum after winning the Brentwood Standard Play earlier in the month.
Proving that age is no boundary at the board, five-year-old Ani (just one week after his birthday) earned a special prize for securing his first-ever competitive victory against an adult opponent.
A highlight of the awards was a special family trophy presented to the family of Maansi, Maadesh, and Mani for their combined contributions:
- Maansi (Year 4): Honoured for her standout game against International Master Richard Pert.
- Maadesh (Year 11): Recognised for setting up the venue ahead of the tournament.
- Mani (pictured below with daughted Maansi): Recognised for assisting as an arbiter throughout the day.
