Chess Team Flourish in Contest Debut
Brentwood School’s Chess Team made a successful debut in the Junior Four Nations (4NCL) competition held at South Normanton in Derbyshire last weekend.
Competition day for the nine players, and their dedicated band of accompanying staff, started very early with a long drive up to the Peak District. A and B teams then played 5 rounds over the two days with each game lasting up to 3 hours.
Brentwood School Chess Coach, Robin Slade said:
“The chess was as competitive as you would expect in a top national competition but played in excellent spirit throughout. Our A team finished in 7th place in Division One while our B team finished in 4th place in Division Two (beaten by the winners and runners-up).”
“I was impressed by the concentration and quality of play shown by our players as well as the sportsmanship they showed in victory and defeat. For some, this was their first experience of across-the-board competition at this level as well as their first overnight school trip.”
The Brentwood team included Nina, Max, Jaden, Markos, Shayan, Taej, Rostislav, Yahya and Anushka. A special thanks goes to Mr Slade; Mr Richard Pert, Director of Chess; Mr John Bowley, Head of Chess; Mrs Caroline Bowley and Mr Ian Walton for making the long trek up the M1.
