Chess Popularity Soars
More than 130 young chess enthusiasts took part in the 7th Brentwood Junior Open Chess Championships hosted by Brentwood School.
The tournament, held on Sunday 5th March, was open to any junior players and was split into 4 sections based on age and experience. Among the competitors were 35 pupils from Brentwood Senior and Prep Schools.
Brentwood School Head of Chess, Robin Slade, said: “Congratulations to everyone who took part in a fun day’s chess played in excellent spirit. We had players (and prize winners) from Years 1 to 13 and for many it was their first competitive tournament.”
Brentwood School siblings, Max and Nina Pert, battled it out for the Senior School Championship with Max taking the honours in a play-off after they both finished on 5 out of 6 in the U18 Open.
George Nanayakkara became Brentwood Prep School Champion as the highest-scoring Prep School pupil in the Under 11 Open.
Mr Slade added:
“Thank you to everyone from Brentwood School, the Essex Junior Chess Association and elsewhere who gave up their time to enable the tournament to take place.”
