Samba Batucada for Black History Month

As part of our Black History celebrations, the School playground was transformed yesterday into a vibrant festival of rhythm and sound, courtesy of an extraordinary Samba Batucada performance by Year 6.

Having studied the rich Afro-Brazilian tradition in their music lessons with Mrs Romhany, Year 6 put their hard work and talent on full display. As the rest of the school filed out for their lunchtime break, they were immediately greeted by an electric atmosphere driven by traditional Samba instruments – including the booming bass of the surdo, the crisp snap of the repenique and tamborim, the melodic chime of the agogô, and the energetic shimmer of the chocalho.

The energy on display was contagious. Guided by the sharp whistle signals from Mrs Romhany, the children chanted and played their rhythmic cues with huge smiles, effortlessly locking together intricate, multi-layered beats. True to the communal spirit of Samba, inclusivity was at the heart of the performance: every single pupil in Year 6 had the chance to participate, transitioning smoothly between classes and swapping instruments so everyone had their moment to play.

The highlight of the break came when the Rio carnival spirit fully took hold. The performance turned into a bustling parade as Year 6 began to process across the grounds, weaving through the playgrounds, navigating past the table tennis tables, and marching all the way over to EYFS. The look of delight and wonder on the younger children’s faces as the carnival swept past was something truly special to behold.

It was an unforgettable celebration of music, culture, and teamwork that brought joy to the entire school. A huge congratulations and a massive well done to Year 6 for an incredible performance!
