Year 4 and Ensembles Concert

The air in the Prep Hall was absolutely electric last night as we gathered for a spectacular showcase of talent, featuring our entire Year 4 cohort alongside a selection of our brilliant ensembles and choirs. It was a night that celebrated not just music, but the confidence, hard work, and sheer joy of our pupils from Year 3 through to Year 6.

The String Orchestra, directed by Ms Waddington, kicked off the evening with an incredibly impressive feat: performing entirely from memory! Their ‘Cool Caribbean’ set a high bar, showing a level of confidence and a gorgeous ensemble sound that spanned beginners & more advanced levels.

The momentum continued with the Junior Choir, directed by Mrs Bartlett and Mrs Bleakley. It’s safe to say the children sang their hearts out, delivering a performance full of heart and infectious energy that resonated throughout the hall.

Next up, the Junior Band brought a funky vibe to the stage. Under the direction of Mr Downing, they treated us to some brave improvised solos. It was wonderful to see the full range of wind and brass instruments in action, a testament to the success of our Endangered Instrument Scheme. This was followed by the Brass Ensemble, who made a truly impressive sound on some notoriously difficult instruments, led by Mr Rumsey and Mr Barber.

A large group of children in school uniforms stand on stage singing with raised arms, performing as the Year 4 Choir. A projector above displays their setlist to an audience in a school hall.

The Chapel Choir provided a moment of beautiful contrast. They performed a moving ‘Irish Blessing,’ supported by the voices of Senior School students and staff, followed by the exuberant ‘Sing Out My Soul,’ which delighted the audience with its sudden, joyful exclamations at the beginning!

The Orchestra then took centre stage for a sophisticated set. From the classical precision of Haydn’s Surprise Symphony to the toe-tapping ‘Brentwood Blues,’ the standard of playing was exceptionally high. The blues number was a particular highlight, featuring a variety of brave, improvised solos over a walking bass line.

Last but certainly not least, the Year 4 Choir brought the house down. They revisited the excitement of last Friday’s House Music with a high-energy medley that had the atmosphere buzzing. Accompanied by a talented band of Senior School students and VMTs, they moved from the emotive melody of Lin Marsh’s ‘Believe’, conducted by Mr Barber, to a show-stopping rock ‘n’ roll finale, with combined choir and orchestra.

Complete with ‘moves and grooves’ choreographed by our dance expert, Miss Ritchie, the finale was a masterclass in enthusiasm. The look of pure excitement on the children’s faces said it all!

A concert of this scale is a massive team effort. A huge thank you to:

  • The Prep and Senior School Staff and our dedicated VMTs.
  • The Senior School students who shared their time and talent despite their own busy schedules.
  • Our sound & lighting tech team, Mr Herson & Mrs Roberts.
  • Miss Ritchie for adding that extra sparkle to our choreography.

“The audience were in awe and left the hall buzzing. But the biggest thanks must go to the children, their energy and enthusiasm are what made the night truly unforgettable.” Mrs Romhany

Well done to everyone involved! It was a night to remember.
