Sun, Sprints, and Science

This week at the Prep has been even more jam-packed than usual. Tuesday, we held our annual EYFS and Key Stage 1 Summer Event in which the children raced for their Houses. There were also performances to dazzle the parents; Reception performed the Dinosaur Brigade, Year 1 performed a dance routine to the K-Pop hit Golden, and Year 2 took on the tangle challenge of Maypole dancing. All did superbly well.

Young children in sports kit race on a grass track while adults watch from behind a barrier. The scene is outdoors, sunny, and lively, with the audience standing or sitting in the background.

After an afternoon of obstacle races, relays and sprints, the winning House this time round is ..(drum roll)… Bayman!

On Wednesday, author and spoken word artist Kimba visited us as part of our Aim Higher programme. We also hosted 4 other schools so that their children could also benefit from Kimba’s workshop on creative writing. The children concluded the day brimming with ideas and keen to get started with their own writing projects.

Our Year 6 pupils returned this afternoon after a week long residential at an outdoor activity centre. Exhausted but uplifted after a week of memory making, physical challenges, team building and general hilarity. With two weeks left for Year 6 at the Prep, it is an equally exciting and poignant time as they start to be able to say, “…this is the last time we will do this”.

A group of children wearing helmets and life jackets sit on a homemade raft made of blue barrels, smiling and holding paddles on a green lake, surrounded by trees.
Two people wearing helmets and harnesses are suspended by ropes next to a tall wooden pole with foot platforms, participating in a high ropes course against a blue sky.
A group of children pose outdoors at an archery range, pointing their fingers playfully like toy guns towards the camera. They stand on gravel with targets visible in the background under a cloudy sky.

We will have more photos from all of our events available soon.

This week also saw four Head’s Awards being presented, championing the success of the Year 4 science projects.

Freddie W was awarded a Head of Prep award for his outstanding science homework project on how gravity affects the direction of a plant’s growth. His work featured superb descriptions of both his method and results, and included excellent scientific drawings.
In addition, he went the extra mile by using a microscope to look closely at the different ways that roots grow. The whole project was outstanding and showed real scientific thinking.

Aarav R was awarded a Head of Prep award for demonstrating absolutely stellar inquiry skills in his Science Project. It was brilliant to see how he took the amazing things he had learnt from a recent trip to NASA and used them as building blocks to explore even further.

Alessia G-C was awarded a Head of Prep award for demonstrating absolutely brilliant scientific insight and knowledge. Alessia did a superb job of testing her ideas, and the way she presented her results was excellent, clear, organised, and easy to understand.

Theodore D was awarded a Head of Prep award for showcasing a truly excellent investigation into how plants grow. He displayed fantastic knowledge of the science behind his results, and it was brilliant to see how clearly he understood what his plants were doing.

The weekend is set to be a hot one. I do hope you have an enjoyable time basking in the sunshine.

Best wishes

Alice Goodfellow
