Alumni Awards & Achievements

Old Brentwood Ravi Gupta, Professor of Clinical Microbiology, Cambridge Institute for Therapeutic Immunology and Infectious Diseases, Cambridge University, was recently named in the TIME 100 list for 2020 of most influential people worldwide.

He and his lab teams work extensively on HIV drug resistance in search of a cure for the disease and in 2019 the work Ravi leads was widely reported around the world as the second case of a patient in HIV remission – the so called ‘London Patient’ (the first being referred to as the ‘Berlin Patient’).

More topically, concerning COVID-19, the Gupta Lab group recently introduced the SAMBA II point of care test into clinical practice at Addenbrookes for rapid diagnosis of COVID19 and as a result of this work the rapid test has now been implemented nationwide across many hospitals, schools and care homes.

During the pandemic the lab has also started a basic science program to understand the basis of the second immune mediated part of the disease and evolution of the virus within patients in response to convalescent plasma therapy and the antiviral drug ‘Remdesevir’. You can read more about Ravi's work on his website.

Congratulations to Ravi on his considerable achievements to date and the acknowledgement of these, this year, by TIME.

We hope, and Ravi is keen, that he will be able to return to School in the not too distant future to talk to the current generation of aspiring medical students.
