Popular Chess Competition Proves Valuable Experience

Brentwood School’s intrepid chess aficionados took part in the English Chess Federation School U19 Rapidplay at Eton College last weekend.

56 teams from 42 schools (over 350 students) took part in the first post-Covid return of this popular annual competition.

Brentwood School entered 2 teams and took 13 students. Team selection was made to give a number of students a chance to make their Brentwood School debuts and half of the squad was made up of Year 7 and 8 students, highlighting the school's commitment to nurturing young chess talent.

Max P took the helm of Brentwood School's A team and emerged as the top performer, achieving a remarkable score of 4.5 out of 5. Four of the other 5 players showcased their skills by winning at least 2 out of 5 games, securing a respectable position just below the halfway mark in the competition.

Meanwhile, the B team exhibited their determination and dedication, with nearly all players notching up 1 or 2 wins out of 5 games. Special recognition goes to Jola A, a Year 13 student, whose exceptional performance on the top board added valuable age and height to the team's composition. 

Head of Chess Robin Slade said: “It was a great day out and a valuable chess experience for our students. Our Year 7 debutants Pranav C and Joe F both displayed their potential by securing 2 wins out of 5 games each, promising a bright future for the school's chess programme. Special mention must also go to Maadesh M (Year 8) who stepped up to the A team during one round due to illness and secured a commendable victory.
