Brentwood School hosted a regional section of the Junior Team Challenge on behalf of the English Chess Federation on 23rd November.

The Junior Team Challenge, for School teams of four in Years 7 and 8, gives students their first taste of competitive chess.

17 students (12 from Year 8, five from Year 7) represented Brentwood School, some for the first time. KEGS and Bancofts both entered two teams each, making it an eight-team competition.

The students played four rounds (in between eating cake!) with the teams paired in each round with a team from a different school.

Heading into the final round, Brentwood A led KEGS A and Brentwood Bishops by a single point. Brentwood A faced KEGS A while Brentwood Bishops faced Bancrofts B.

The tournament came down to the final game to finish when Brentwood School student Chiza won for Brentwood A to tie their match with KEGS A. Brentwood A finished on 12 points with KEGS A and Brentwood Bishops on 11.

Well done to all students, it was an excellent afternoon of chess that was played in great sporting spirit. Congratulations to our winning A team students - Aryan, Maadesh, Chiza and Pranav - and to everyone who played their part in such a well-contested event.

Brentwood School now moves forward to the National Final taking place in Birmingham in April 2024. Good luck to all!
