Brentwood School proudly organised and hosted a Girls’ Chess Afternoon last Saturday, bringing together enthusiastic young chess players from Brentwood Senior and Prep Schools, as well as participants from across Essex.

The event provided a platform for girls of all ages, ranging from Year 2 to Year 13, to engage in an afternoon of friendly chess coaching and playing.

Participants were treated to expert guidance from the school’s Director of Chess, International Master Richard Pert. Adding to the excitement, the event welcomed special guest coach Woman Grandmaster (WGM) Lan Yao. Lan Yao, the British Women’s Champion, recently returned from representing England in the European Team Championships with an individual bronze medal.

Lan Yao commenced the afternoon by sharing insights from one of her own games, providing valuable lessons and inspiration to the aspiring chess players. The attendees were then divided into two groups for interactive playing and coaching sessions, before the  groups came together for the highlight of the afternoon - a special challenge simultaneous match where everyone had the opportunity to face off against Lan Yao and Richard Pert.

Brentwood School Head of Chess, Mr Robin Slade, said: “It was a relaxed and friendly afternoon’s chess with players ranging from Year 2 to Year 13. Chess once again proved its ability to break down age barriers.

“Thank you to chess mum and professional photographer Melinda Wilde for the photos featured here. Thank you also to Krishan (Year 13) and various members of staff for coming in to help with the event.”
